Professor Tuba Kocaturk speaks at Singapore Design Week

08 March 2019, National Design Centre

UNESCO Creative Cities of Design Public Forum was portrayed by media as one of the few “highlights” of Singapore Design Week, the event mandatory to attend for all engaged in contemporary design practices. Design magazine Wallpaper reported: “It’s not often that you’ll get the chance to hobnob with global designers and experts to canvas hot topics like the role culture plays in urban development. Creative leaders from 15 cities will pile on stage to explain their plans to hitch design to sustainable growth, public policy, businesses and communications.”
Representatives from UNESCO Creative Cities of Design shared their efforts in designing for impact in education, public policy, businesses and communication. Participants engaged with these representatives to understand how they are turning to design to add value and grow sustainably in an increasing demanding, complex and fast-changing world. The program included 4 major “pillar” discussions: Design & Policy, Design & Education, Design & Business, and Design & Communications.
Professor Tuba Kocaturk was invited to speak at forum as representative of the City of Greater Geelong. She is working very closely with the city towards developing and implementing a  visionary agenda for Geelong in support of its new UNESCO City of Design designation. Her talk From Product to System Innovation was a critical reflection on some of the metrics we use today to measure the impact and value of design and whether we are really taking into consideration the systemic impact created by design, in a world that is fast moving away from an object-based towards a system-based perspective of innovation.
